Affordable Home Gym Equipment to Keep You in Shape

Working out at home brings so much freedom that you can’t find in a gym.
First and foremost, you don’t have to drive anywhere. The commute to and from the gym takes up a big chunk of time and is a big part of the reason many people don’t workout.
Second, working out at home can save you a lot of money. You aren’t paying any extra monthly fee to use equipment and facilities. The only costs associated with a home “gym” are for the few pieces of equipment you need and potential workout videos or fitness plans to keep you on track. However, these are one-time purchases, meaning you can keep the equipment and videos you buy for as long as you please and never pay for them again.
The third point that’s worth mentioning is that you don’t have to wait around to use equipment like you do at the gym. Chances are it’s just you and potentially your partner working out together. And odds are, you don’t use the same weights for certain exercises. That means you can spend more time doing the exercises you want and when you want to, as opposed to waiting around for the equipment you need.
Due to all of these reasons, plus many more, creating your own home gym is well worth the cost. Thankfully the cost is fairly low, as it makes this option much more attainable (in most aspects) than a gym membership. Honestly, you only really NEED a few items for less than $100 and you’ll be on your way to a happier, healthier you. 🙂
Affordable Home Gym Equipment: Everything You Need, Nothing You Don’t
Many people on the internet will try and push you to buy a bunch of random exercise equipment that you really don’t need. Of course you can buy it if you want, but why would you if you don’t need to?
A lot of well-known personal trainers such as Tony Horton and Jillian Michaels created workout videos that require only a few pieces of equipment. For example, Tony Horton’s P90 only requires either resistance bands or dumbbells and both options are shown in the workout videos. Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred only requires some dumbbells (which in most cases can be substituted for resistance bands). Don’t think for one second that these workouts won’t give you a run for your money and help you achieve your goals, because they most certainly will.
Just remember: it is 100% possible to get in a FABULOUS workout at home and with minimal equipment, too. Below I’ve listed the only things you could possibly need to get in shape at home. And great news: they’re all relatively affordable!
Home Gym Equipment #1: Resistance Bands
Resistance bands are the ultimate alternative to using dumbbells. The main perk is that they’re significantly cheaper, making home workouts so much more affordable. Not to mention how versatile they are!
There are a few different types of resistances bands so that your upper and lower body both get a great workout. For your upper body workouts, I recommend this set. It contains 5 different bands at 5lbs, 15lbs, 20lbs, 30lbs, and 35lbs. They are stackable, meaning you can pair up the 5lb and 20lb bands to get a total resistance of 25lb. Also included in this set are 2 cushioned soft-grip handles, 2 soft ankle straps, 1 door anchor, and a carrying bag for it all. You can get all that for less than $20 (as of November 1st, 2017), which is a fraction of the cost you’ll pay for dumbbells of the same weight.
These resistance bands are great if you don’t have dumbbells and need to get in an upper body session. Some exercises these resistance bands are perfect for are bicep curls, overhead tricep extensions, bent over rows, overhead presses, pull ups, among many more. They can also be used for lower body exercises.
Another great set of resistance bands are these loop exercise bands. For $10.95 (as of November 1st, 2017), you get 5 bands of varying resistance levels, travel carry bag, instruction guide, EBook, and access to online workout videos. These bands are used to add more resistance to common exercises, such as; squats, push-ups, side lying hip abductions, and more.
As you can see, there are so many uses for resistance bands. Not only are they affordable but they’ll also get the job done!
Dumbbells are unfortunately a very expensive piece of gym equipment that don’t seem to change in price. Due to this, I highly recommend trying resistance bands first and then switching to these if the bands don’t seem to cut it. Otherwise, only buy a few sets of lighter weight to begin with as those are the ones you’ll only use at the beginning (unless you’re more experienced).
If you’re going to pickup some dumbbells (literally), I recommend getting some of the adjustable variety. Aside from them being cheaper than traditional dumbbells, they also take up a lot less space. With that being said, these Yes4All Adjustable Dumbbells are a great price. That brand has a few different weight options, all the way from 40lbs to 200lbs. They come with different weighted plates, allowing you to customize how much you need by adding or subtracting plates. They’re very well reviewed and very affordable, considering you can get a set of 3lb, 5lb, and 8lb dumbbells (32lbs total) for roughly the same price.
For growing the upper body, pull ups are pretty important. The most common way to practice pull ups at home is with a pull up bar. The bar can also be used for push ups and dips, making it a multi-functional tool. Just be mindful when purchasing to make sure it will fit your doorway.
Now if you’re trying to reduce your spending, you don’t have to purchase a pull up bar. As mentioned above, one of the many uses of resistance bands includes simulating pull-ups. In Tony Horton’s P90X, he shows how to use the resistance bands to work the same muscles that pull ups do. If you don’t have access to P90X, here is a great YouTube video demonstrating pull ups with resistance bands. If you purchase resistance bands, it eliminates the need for a pull up bar, unless of course you absolutely want one.
Home Gym Equipment #4: Exercise Mat
If you have hard floors and no rugs, an exercise mat is a wise investment. It’s certainly not a necessity, but it will definitely make any floor exercises more bearable. Trust me, there’s nothing worse than the feeling you get when your knees, hips, or spine touch the hard floor.
Home Gym Equipment #6: Exercise Ball
Exercise balls are perfect for switching up your workouts. In addition, they help improve stability, as you’re trying to keep perfect form while wiggling around the ball. This in turn helps with those abs! Not only that, but they’re comfortable to sit on and fun to play around on.
To step up your workouts (literally), an aerobic platform will get the job done. My favorite is The Step Original Aerobic Platform, as it’s what’s used in gyms all around the world. The height is adjustable, making it very versatile for any age or exercise. It’s perfect for lunges, squats, tricep dips, ab exercises, a weight bench when lifting weights, and combining cardio and weights. If you’re looking for a way to get the most out of your workouts, this is definitely the way to go.
