How to Get Rid of Acne Without Medication!

Acne sucks. End of story.
It ruins your skin, steals your self-confidence, and makes you want to curl up in a ball and hide. Acne is the first thing people notice about you, even if it’s not who you are. And it’s totally unfair.
I’ve dealt with acne for as long as I can remember and it’s a big reason I’m so shy. It’s been on my face, chest, and back, so it’s not just my face I’ve always tried to hide. It makes me feel like I can’t do anything without constantly being judged.
Since you’re reading this, chances are that you, too, are struggling with acne and going through what I’ve been through. I’m here to tell you that you’re not alone and that there is hope. The reason I know this is because I was in your shoes, and I’ve finally figured out how to get rid of acne, all through a simple diet change. There isn’t even any need to take antibiotics anymore!
My Method on How to Get Rid of Acne Once and for All
Okay, hear me out. A lot of people are skeptical about this, even people who have “tried” it, and it’s because they don’t give it enough time. I cannot stress this point enough: you need to give it time. Now we can get to my solution on how to get rid of acne for good.
In the past, I’ve heard that dairy and sugary foods can cause acne, but never really payed much attention. And it’s pretty likely that you have also heard this. I know, cutting out dairy and sugar seems like such an impossible thing to do. Pizza is just too good. And don’t even get me started on ice cream!
However, if you’re honestly fed up with spending so much time and money on different acne medications and face washes because you think that it’s going to work better than the last one you bought, this is the solution to your problem. I was the exact same way for 8 years until I decided to give up dairy and cut back on my sugar intake, and I couldn’t be happier with my decision to stop consuming it!
Just think of all those times you’ve looked in the mirror and just broke down crying because your face doesn’t even look like you anymore. Remember how self conscious you are because of those red bumps that cover your beautiful face. And know that giving up dairy and eating healthier is totally worth gaining your life back. Because it is. Especially since there are tons of dairy alternatives (I know because I eat them everyday!). Yes, you really can still have chocolate and ice cream and so many other things (obviously in moderation).
The Link Between Dairy and Acne
The relationship between dairy and acne has been debated over for years. It’s hard to pinpoint if dairy is directly related to ALL acne. However, it definitely plays a role in some people’s complexion, mine included.
There have been several scientific studies conducted about the effects dairy has on acne. Unfortunately, they have been somewhat inconclusive. Still, there definitely have been commonalities between the two, and here is why.
Unless your dairy products are organic, they are produced by cows who are given steroids, antibiotics, and hormones. When you consume non-organic dairy products, you are putting all of that into your own body (as if we need more hormones, am I right?). Dairy products also cause an insulin spike in the body. As a result of all of this, acne can occur.
Now in some cases, people don’t have to eliminate dairy completely to have their acne clear up, but just switch to organic dairy products. Since everyone is different, though, the only way to know is through trial and error.
I personally didn’t feel like buying organic dairy products because we don’t use regular milk anyway and there are tons of dairy-free alternatives out there. Also, organic is expensive soooo yeah.
Here are some awesome dairy-free products that I use and recommend, as they make eliminating dairy so much easier. I wanted to throw these in here so that you know you have options and don’t have to give up the good stuff!
My Favorite Dairy-Free Products:
• Unsweetened Original Almond Milk (any brand of this flavor): Good for cereal, cooking, baking, anything that requires milk. Doesn’t really have a taste which is nice. There are flavored ones if you prefer your milk that way.
• Silk Almond Milk Yogurt Alternative: Sooo delicious and it’s dairy-free! They have a few different flavors (vanilla, peach, strawberry, dark chocolate coconut). Just make sure you’re getting the almond milk one, not the one made from soy. Too much soy isn’t good for the body!
• Smart Balance Dairy-Free Butter: Tastes EXACTLY like butter, can be substituted for anything that requires butter!
• Coconut Oil: If you don’t want to use the dairy-free butter for cooking and baking, try coconut oil.
• Dairy-Free Ice Cream: Can’t forget about this one! There are so many out there. Some are made from nut milks (cashew, almond) or coconut milk. They’re all pretty yum!
• Enjoy Life Foods: This brand is your go-to for snack and dessert related dairy-free goodies. They have chocolate, chocolate chips, cookies, chewy bars, baking mixes, etc. They’re free from the top 8 allergens (yes, dairy is one of them!) and they taste so delicious!! You can get coupons on their website – I got a bag of chocolate chips for $0.99 at Kroger the other day.
• I haven’t tried any dairy-free cheeses because I’m skeptical about it and don’t want to waste money. And most of them use corn starch and I have a corn sensitivity so that’s no bueno. But I’m sure you can find some if you really want some dairy-free cheese.
• Pure Maple Syrup and Honey: These can be substituted for granulated sugar. This is so much tastier and hasn’t caused me any breakouts.
When you eliminate dairy and reduce your sugar intake, you need to give your new diet at least 5-6 weeks, as change takes time. If you go to a dermatologist, then you’ve heard them say this over and over again. It’s because it’s true.
So now that we’ve gotten past how dairy and acne are related, we can get to my results from eliminating dairy and cutting back on sugary foods.
Why I Chose to Eliminate Dairy Products
As I mentioned earlier, I’ve had acne for a long time. Since I was in middle school, I’ve suffered with it. It’s been extremely soul-crushing and has damaged my self-esteem. Now my acne’s not nearly as bad as some people’s, but it’s also not pretty. And it still sucks because it’s what everyone notices first when they meet me.
For the past year it seems I’ve always had at least one pimple on my chin every day. They’re usually the ones that come in under the surface and hurt a lot. I was just fed up with always having red bumps on my chin and not wanting to look in the mirror. I felt bad my boyfriend and anyone who looked at me had to see them.
And it didn’t help that in middle school I had an allergic reaction to benzoyl peroxide that made my eyes puffy. For me, this eliminates the use of a lot of common products used to treat acne, making it even more difficult to get the help I desperately need.
For the last 8 years I’ve been going to a dermatologist and nothing’s really helped. I’ve taken antibiotics for a few years and used tons of creams. However, my face would still breakout ALL. THE. TIME. And if I didn’t use the stuff they gave me, it would be even worse.
I knew something needed to change, so I made 2 changes. The first was a new dermatologist. Then it was to eliminate dairy.
Choosing to Phase-out Dairy Products
Just a few months ago, I switched dermatologists and he took me off the antibiotics I was taking for 2 years. He gave me some other ones to try and they ended up working the same as the old ones. After 2 months of trying the new antibiotics, he gave me like 4 different pills to take at once. Not to mention I was still using 2 prescription face creams on top of that.
I absolutely hate taking pills so I felt so defeated that I had to take 4 more. I really didn’t want to take those pills, so I decided something needed to change. This is when I finally decided that eliminating dairy and not eating so much sugar was my only option.
After just a week of eliminating dairy, my acne started to go away and I could see myself again. It’s now been 4 months and my face is doing pretty well. That’s also without taking ANY antibiotics! I still use a topical gel at night and wash twice daily but that’s it!
I will say that I do slip every once in a while and eat pizza or a cookie, and it’s totally fine if you do, too. It happens, but you should really try and minimize those slip ups. I am really trying to get my act in order so that I don’t keep consuming things that make me breakout.
The only times I breakout are when I’ve been super stressed because of 3 midterms in a week or because I eat some pizza or cookies. The very next day after eating dairy and sugary foods, I get some pimples on my chin. This confirms that these are the culprits to my many years of suffering.
All I can say is that it makes me wish I would have tried this sooner. So many of my problems would have been resolved or nonexistent.
Even if your acne is worse than mine, cutting out dairy can still provide you with great results. However, it’s still a very helpful, motivating video that I highly suggest watching if you’re in desperate need of help.
Note: I also don’t eat red meat (except kielbasa), only turkey and chicken. Red meat is super fatty and has been known to cause an increase in sebum production, thus creating more acne. Good news is, there are plenty of great recipes that don’t use red meat and you’ll save some money!
Different Causes of Acne
There are definitely other factors that can contribute to acne. Diet is probably the biggest factor in creating clearer skin (hence the dairy elimination).
Fatty and Sugary Foods
For instance, foods rich in fats and sugars are known to cause a reaction in some people. Fats tend to increase your body’s sebum production, which can get stuck in pores along with dead skin cells. This creates acne, so if you eat a lot of foods rich in fats and sugars, try cutting those out too and see if you get any good results.
I have definitely noticed that when I eat cookies or any other sweets that contain sugar, my face also tends to breakout. It’s super hard to avoid, and I slip up sometimes. But I guess it’s just my body’s way of telling me to eat healthier or else I’m going to be stuck with acne. What I’ve found that curbs my sugar cravings are the Outshine Fruit Bars. They are sooo good and only contain natural sugars. I’ve also started using pure maple syrup or honey when I bake things, instead of regular granulated sugar. Those have definitely helped, too.
Not Enough Fruits & Veggies
It is super important to eat healthy. Eating lots of vegetables and fruits low in sugar are not only good for your health, but also for your complexion. They are full of vitamins and antioxidants that are good for your skin. If you mainly eat processed foods and have acne, try eating more fruits and veggies. They will do wonders for your skin because it will be getting the proper nutrients it needs.
A lack of water consumption is also bad for your skin. Since skin is an organ, it needs water. If it doesn’t get enough, your skin won’t look it’s best because it is being deprived of something it needs. It is recommended men drink around 13 cups (104oz) and women should drink 9 cups (72oz) daily.
I have a 32oz Hydro Flask and I drink about 3-32ozs a day. I’ve had mine for over a year now and have yet to drink warm water or cold tea. Another big factor is stress. When you are stressed, your hormones can get unbalanced, leading to acne. The same goes for a lack of sleep. This leads to stress because you’re exhausted, thus creating a hormone imbalance.
I’ve noticed a lot of breakouts happen when I’m stressed. Sometimes it’s due to a lack of sleep and other times it’s because I just have too much to do.
How to Get Rid of Acne Already on Your Face
Just making small changes, whether it be to your diet or how you manage your time can drastically improve your acne. In the meantime while you’re waiting for results, below are some tips on dealing with the acne you currently have so you don’t make it worse.
Don’t Touch Your Face
First and foremost, our hands carry a lot of germs. If you touch your face before washing your hands, you can spread those germs to your face and potentially get sick. You can also spread more bacteria onto your face, causing more breakouts.
I know it’s difficult to not touch your face, it’s something I find myself doing several times throughout the day. But it’s not good, especially if you’re picking at your acne. Leave it alone, let it heal, and don’t add more germs and dirt to your face!
Wash Your Face Twice Daily
You should also only wash your face 2 times daily, once in the morning and once in the evening. Otherwise, you can irritate your skin and cause more breakouts. Face cleansers are drying to your skin, and if you use them too often, your skin will dry out and produce more oil. This in turn leads to more acne.
Pat Dry With a Clean Towel
You should always pat your face to dry it off, not rub it. By rubbing your face with a towel (or anything), you risk disrupting any acne you currently have. It can also lead to dark circles under the eyes, as the skin there is very delicate.
Make sure you are always using a clean towel! And make sure your hands are clean, too. Otherwise, you can spread dirt and bacteria onto your skin, counteracting the cleansing process.
Drink More Water
As mentioned above, your skin is an organ (the largest of your body!). In order to keep it looking healthy, it needs enough water. A very simple way to improve your complexion is to drink plenty of water! Women should drink at least 72oz daily and men should drink 104oz. Water is pretty much the only thing I drink and I absolutely love it.
